Powerful and Passionate Stories Begin Debate on Surrogacy Reform
Debate on the Assisted Reproductive Technology and Surrogacy Bill 2025 began in the Western Australian Parliament today, with government members setting a respectful and empathetic tone through personal and heartfelt contributions.
Opening the debate, the Member for Scarborough, Stuart Aubrey, a gay man impacted by the legislation, spoke about the importance of empathy, respect, and diversity of lived experience in shaping the parliament’s debate.
He reflected on the invisible barriers faced by Western Australians like him who are currently excluded from surrogacy access and described how reform offers hope and belonging.
Government members throughout the day shared their own powerful stories, including lived experiences with infertility and IVF, shared stories from constituents impacted by the reform, and gave heartfelt acknowledgements of the advocates who have fought for reform for many years.
Many spoke about love, their families, and the importance of giving more Western Australians the chance to experience the joy of parenthood.
The debate will continue next week when members of the Opposition are expected to make their contributions.
Supporters of surrogacy reform are encouraged to contact their local Members of Parliament and urge them to support the bill to ensure equality of access for all Western Australians.
